Family Tours

"Imagine a day spent viewing a wolf pack, a nest of osprey, a herd of bison, a band of bighorn sheep munching on underbrush -- all in the glorious setting that only Yellowstone National Park can provide.  Imagine all that in the company of children or grandchildren who remain enthralled throughout an eight hour day and return home enlightened and excited by their firsthand encounter with wildlife in its natural setting.  This was my unforgettable experience with my thirteen and fourteen year old teen aged grandchildren and could be yours with environmental biologist Emil McCain. Emil's vast knowledge of Yellowstone and ability to relate to adventurers of all ages helped us to create indelible memories. Using the many telescopes he provided and the cameras on our smart phones, we ended our tour with an enduring record that became a major portion of our Yellowstone album. Undeniably, a day with Emil McCain will be the high point of your park experience."

We love guiding families in Yellowstone. Children have a natural fascination with the natural world, and we passionately explore the wonders of Yellowstone with them. Our Family Tours are fun and educational as we walk through visual examples of how animals live in this beautiful landscape and what their relationships are like with the other animals and plants around them. Exploring a stream bank, we might find bird nests, animal tracks or even see where a beaver has been working. A nature walk leads us to the secret places where different animals choose to live and raise their babies, and we stop to talk about why certain animals might live in one place over another. The baby animals of Yellowstone are especially appealing to youngsters, and summertime in the valleys of Yellowstone have an abundance of babies of all shapes and sizes to enjoy.

Our family tours are specially designed for the age(s) of your youngsters.  The day tour will contain many aspects from our Wildlife Watching tour, but geared in a way to stimulate kids and help them get excited about the animals, the ecology and natural world around them. We like to take short walks and provide the powerful experience of discovery and experienced-based learning. Some of those short hikes can also include the "discovery" of backcountry geyser basins, complete with bubbling mud pots and stinky sulfer pits-the kind of things kids of all ages just love!

Moments in the Park

The two osprey chicks in Lamar Canyon are testing their wings and think they are getting ready to take flight. They are however, still being fed by their mother... But look at those fish-grabbing feet!!! At this age their blood red eyes really distinguish them from the adults, whose eyes are a golden yellow. Otherwise the chicks are really beginning to look like full-blown adult osprey.
